How I Manage My Food Allergies
For about 14 years I have had food allergies. My allergies are constantly changing and can be hard to manage, but I always figure it out. Here are some ways I figure my allergies out.
1. Always Check Labels
I always check labels it can be annoying but a reaction is always worse. Sometimes a company will change its ingredients, so reading ingredient also saves me a reaction from not knowing. I have done it for so long that I can remember what brands use soy and which ones don't.
2. Google Menus Before Arriving
I don't usually go to restaurants, but when I do I always check their online allergies menu and make a list of what I can and can't have. I barely eat at restaurants but when I do its probably Culvers. (not sponsored)
3. Bring My Own Food
Ever since kindergarten I have brought my own lunch. My wonderful mom or dad makes all of my sibling's lunch. I also bring my own food at sleepovers and parties. Bring my own food is so normal to me that when I eat at the place its so weird to me.
4. Making my Own Food
I can't have most processed food so I make my own. I am a great cook and have half a notebook of recipes that I make. My peers get nervous trying something that is modified, but in the end, I get good reviews from them. I even make my own bread because I have very few options. Lucky I have a bread machine so I basically just press start.
5. Understanding My Allergies
I am kind of a nerd, so I constantly am learning about random topics. I know a lot about my allergies. This helps me explain my allergies to others. Also, my knowledge helps me identify when I am having a reaction.
6. Teaching Others
I get a lot of question and I try to answer them to my best ability. I think it nice to see when people check labels on products to see if I can have them. I used to get annoyed when people ask me questions but now I don't, so ask away.
